LOTTE Cultureworks and Megabox JoongAng to Invest in Revitalizing K-Content
2025.07.22
■ Aiming to strengthen business competitiveness through capital secured via investment attraction; focusing on IP development, film adaptations, and expansion of premium cinemas
■ Supporting recovery and diversification of Korea’s film industry through merger with Megabox JoongAng
LOTTE Cultureworks and Megabox JoongAng announced plans to invest heavily in revitalizing K-content and enhancing competitiveness in their cinema and film businesses. These efforts will be funded by capital secured through external investment and financial restructuring following their merger.
Currently, the domestic film industry is facing stagnation due to the expansion of global streaming platforms, reduced film investments, and declining movie attendance, resulting in a vicious cycle of decreasing new content production.
LOTTE and JoongAng Group expect the merger to break this cycle by sharing operational know-how and integrating marketing capabilities to improve profitability. The merged entity will also attract new investment to improve its financial health, enhance customer service, and accelerate the growth of K-content.
Funds secured through financial restructuring will first be used to enhance the cinema experience, with plans to diversify in-theater services and expand premium screening formats to bring audiences back to cinemas. LOTTE Cultureworks currently operates Superplex, Gwangum Cinema and Charlotte premium cinema halls, while Megabox JoongAng offers xperiences like Dolby Cinema and MX4D. Notably, the two companies plan to expand these premium halls beyond the Seoul metropolitan area to improve regional access to cultural experiences.
Both companies have extensive experience adapting webtoons and web novels into films, so such K-content investment is expected to intensify after the merger. In addition to creating diverse opportunities for film production in Korea, the companies aim to discover and cultivate emerging or high-potential K-content, contributing to the qualitative growth of the domestic film industry. Increased profits will be used for reinvestment and establishment of a sustainable ecosystem to discover and develop new IPs.
A LOTTE Cultureworks representative commented, “We expect the merger to breathe new life into Korea’s stagnant film industry and help secure greater diversity. We will also faithfully comply with the Korea Fair Trade Commission’s procedures, from pre-merger consultations to the official merger notification.”
